Greens must retain budget rules, for taxpayers’ sake

FEBRUARY 14 2019

The Green Party’s reconsideration of the Government’s Budget Responsibility Rules should concern taxpayers, says The New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.

Taxpayers' Union spokesman Louis Houlbrooke says, “Labour will be looking for any excuse to scrap the budget rules without taking the blame – the Greens are trying to give them one.”

“Keeping debt down is a matter of respect for future generations. It means that the government’s finances are future-proofed in the case of an economic crisis or natural disaster, and taxpayers are spared from high debt-servicing costs.”

“The Greens say that, as part of their fiscal policy review, they will be consulting unions. The Taxpayers’ Union is more than happy to help,” concludes Mr Houlbrooke.
