Taxpayers’ Union welcomes damning comments on Provincial Growth Fund from Local Government Chair

FEBRUARY 28 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Taxpayers’ Union is welcoming today's comments from Local Government Funding Chair Craig Stobo’s to 150 delegates at the Local Government New Zealand Localism Symposium that "the worst example of allocative inefficiency has to be the Provincial Growth Fund. It has all the organisational characteristics of lotto."

Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says “Mr Stobo is absolutely right. Even local councils know Mr Jones’ fund is a terrible use of taxpayer money."

“Too many in local government are afraid to criticise the Fund, lest they miss an opportunity to raid taxpayers’ wallets. In contrast Mr Stobo has correctly characterised the Fund as a boondoggle."

"Mr Stobo’s willingness to publicly call-out the Government for this profligate spending demonstrates refreshing honesty and integrity in the local government sector.”
