Survey results will detail farmers’ changing attitudes to climate change

Survey results on how farmers’ understanding of climate change and its impacts have changed over the last decade will be released at the New Zealand Agricultural Climate Change Conference 2019 (NZACCC), in Palmerston North on April 8-9.

The results will also reveal how farmers are now viewing greenhouse gas mitigation efforts in agriculture and give their views on the effective communication of climate change science.

The recent Climate Change Attitudes Survey was conducted by Nielsen as part of the Ministry of Primary Industries’ Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change (SLMACC) Research programme of work, which last year celebrated its 10th anniversary.

It replicates a survey initially run in 2009 to get information about farmers’ opinions in order to give direction to the SLMACC programme and surrounding climate change policy.

This latest survey was conducted at the end of last year, with emphasis on comparing with the initial survey results as well as asking other questions more specific to the current climate change state-of-play.

Full results will be available following the NZACCC, with a snapshot of the key findings presented at the conference.

The NZACCC is New Zealand’s most important agricultural conference on climate change for two years. It will bring together scientists, government policy advisors, farmers and industry leaders to discuss the theme of meeting the challenges of climate change with respect to farming.
