NCEA fees were an unfair tax on a basic high-school education, says the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union.
Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director Jordan Williams says “Families should not face a levy to ensure their children are able to sit NCEA exams, which should be a fully-paid for basic component of our public education system.”
“This will be great news for a huge number of families with teenagers, particularly those looking to sit scholarship exams. The fees on scholarship exams were equivalent to a tax on upward mobility, making it more difficult for aspirational students from low-income families from receiving additional support as they strove towards tertiary education.”
