Selling state assets to provide farmer subsidies is wrong
Selling state assets to provide a subsidised income for farmers
The government announcement it will use $400 million from the sale of state assets to fund irrigation schemes for farmers in the South Island is plain stupid says Mana Economic Justice spokesperson John Minto.
"It's typical of the short-term thinking of capitalists.
"Not only will New Zealanders lose the income stream from these key state assets but the sale proceeds will then be used to provide a subsidised income for farmers.
Mr Minto says this adds insult to injury for New Zealanders already strongly opposed to the prospect of asset sales. This is a rort, pure and simple and New Zealanders should be aware of it as they go to vote this year.
"Farmers should fund their own irrigation schemes but National is keen to continue its unflagging support for corporate welfare. This is the 1% looking after the 1%.
"As well as paying more for electricity under private ownership New Zealanders will also see the spread of "green scum" (grass out of place in a naturally dry environment) and dirty dairying further into our natural, unspoilt areas."
