An abuse free Christmas – the best gift

Christmas can be a stressful time for families, with Police often seeing an increase in family violence.

Age Concern wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday period.

New Zealand Police report Christmas can be a time of apprehension and fear, with relationships strained as families juggle the expectations of holidays; food, presents and bills.

Christmas can also be an especially lonely and challenging time for older people.

Age Concern National President, Liz Baxendine says social isolation increases the risk of elder abuse and neglect.

“We know that abuse escalates in times of stress, which for some people means that Christmas is remembered for all the wrong reasons.

“Financial stress, alcohol and pressure to spend more than people can afford can contribute to elder abuse.”

Mrs Baxendine says focusing on social connections, and not being afraid to speak up if you see things happening which you don’t think are right, are important ways to support older people.

“Christmas is a time for appreciation, not abuse. Value your friends and family.”
