Time for your voice on MMP to be heard!

Time for your voice on MMP to be heard!

Now is the time for Hawke's Bay people to have a voice in the review of MMP (Mixed Member Proportional), our current electoral system.

Local Keep MMP campaigners Maxine Boag (Napier City Councillor) and Liz Remmerswaal (HB Regional Councillor) say with the review to improve MMP underway, now is the time to take a few minutes to make a submission..

"If a submission is made before 5 April, then you can choose to be heard in person," says Cr Boag.

"We understand that if we have sufficient submitters from Hawkes Bay wanting to be heard then the Electoral Commission will come here to hear them, says Cr Remmerswaal.
" So we are hoping that locals will rise to the challenge to have their say here and now."

The councillors had campaigned successfully to keep MMP and make it better, and making submissions will complete the process.

The issues under discussion are: thresholds, by-election candidates, dual candidacy (List and Electorate), the order of candidates on the list, overhang, proportion of electorate seats to list seats, and any other issues you want to bring up. Submitters don't have to comment on every topic, but the opportunity is there.

The website http://www.mmpreview.org.nz/mmp-review has lots of information on the process, and not only can you make your submission online, but you can also read all other submissions so far received to see what others are saying. These are summarised regularly and make interesting reading.
