On Saturday 1st June, from 10am, the by-election campaign of Labour candidate Meka Whaitiri to win the Māori Parliamentary seat for Ikaroa–Rāwhiti will be launched. The event will be held on Ms Whaitiri’s ancestral home lands at Kohupatiki Marae, Hastings. The event will start with a powhiri at 10am and will conclude with kai by 1pm.
Guests will include the Labour Party and Labour Caucus Leadership, including Labour Party Leader David Shearer and Party President Moira Coatsworth, accompanied by many Labour MPs and other Party members and supporters. Also among the hundreds of guests expected to attend the campaign launch will be community organisations, tribal leaders and supporters from throughout the Ikaroa-Rāwhiti electorate.
The campaign launch will be a demonstration of Labour’s strong commitment to getting out the message that a new dawn is rising and that there are brighter days ahead under a Labour-led Government.
Meka Whaitiri said today:
I am a firm believer in local solutions to local problems. I am committed to creating more jobs for our whānau, building warm and affordable homes and unlocking the potential of the post-settlement era for whānau, hapū and iwi.
The centenary of the Kohupatiki Marae will be celebrated 13 – 16 June 2013.
