Citizens search and seizure measure necessary for democracy

Citizens search and seizure a necessary measure for democracy

The non-violent citizens’ search and seizure to retrieve the TPPA text being undertaken today is a necessary measure to defend our democracy, says It’s Our Future NZ national spokesperson Edward Miller.

“For years now It’s Our Future, along with an enormous coalition of concerned groups and citizens, have worked to expose the toxic wrought our government is sleepwalking into with the TPPA negotiations,” said Edward Miller, who has just been down at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade office in Wellington following the group’s progress.

“It’s becoming clearer and clear that ordinary kiwis don’t want this deal. A month ago over 25,000 people marched in over 20 towns and cities across NZ demanding their government walk away from these negotiations,” said Miller.

“Leaked texts indicate that this deal is designed to transfer decision-making power over our country to foreign investors and multinational corporations. What’s worse, it’s being done behind closed doors.”

“The search and seizure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade office in Wellington, taken by ordinary kiwis to get access to the text, is an attempt to counterbalance this obsessive secrecy with people power.”

“We welcome the decision of this group to undertake this action on behalf of New Zealand citizens. Facing growing opposition, we hope the government comes to their senses soon and listens to their demands. Show Us Ya Text!”
