Honolulu Mansion Needs Explanation From Mccully

Honolulu Mansion Needs Explanation From Mccully

It’s not good enough for Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully to shrug his shoulders, and deny knowledge of the $6.2 million Honolulu MFAT mansion exposed by TV3’s Story this evening. Taxpayers’ Union Executive Director, Jordan Williams, says:

“Putting aside the question of why New Zealand even needs a Consulate General in Honolulu, since when does the standard diplomatic package include St Stephen’s Ave-style heated pools, waterfalls and marble?”

“Even if Mr McCully didn’t know that his officials had run off to Hawaii to buy a mansion, he needs to front up and tell the public who approved the purchase. Those in his Ministry who thought this to be a sensible spend need to be corrected."

“How can taxpayers trust their money to be prudently spent by the Government when MFAT splurges $6.2 million on an extravagant house for some mid-tier diplomat? Every dollar wasted on chandeliers in Hawaii is one less for CYFs, hospitals and priorities much higher than Mr Kaiwai's beachside residence."
