Housing NZ Internal Meth Investigation Needs Wider Input

Press Release: Housing New Zealand Internal Meth Investigation Needs Wider Input

13 June 2018

The Tenants Protection Agency welcomes the Housing Minister’s decision to order a full investigation into how Housing New Zealand has handled the meth myth fiasco.

Anthony Rimell, Chair of the Tenants Protection Agency (TPA) called it a sensible decision. “The emotional and financial impacts on tenants has been unacceptable. The stigma of being evicted is huge, and when it turns out that the reasoning was fatally flawed a full-scale investigation is the minimum response.”

Mr Rimell was also pleased that issues around redress was to be part of the investigation.

However Mr Rimell was concerned that the investigation is purely internal. This would do little to allay the concerns of tenants that their issues would be fully taken into account.

“There are many lessons to be learned from this fiasco”, Mr Rimell said. “However for those lessons to result in genuine change, the voices of the tenants themselves must be heard. They are the ones who have suffered the hard-ship of this flawed policy: financially, emotionally, and practically. They alone can provide any investigation with first-hand accounts of the impact. And they are the most vulnerable people in the process. Failing to ensure tenants are heard will only reconfirm their fears that no-one is interested in what happens to them”, Mr Rimell concluded.
