Why are ratepayers funding Tinder for old folks?
19 NOVEMBER 2018
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance is swiping left on Orakei Local Board’s decisionto grant $2,000 to educational programmes including an “online dating workshop for non-techy adults”. The workshop instructs how to make a good online dating profile, how to take sexy pictures, what to write to suitors, and face-to-face speed dating practice.

Alliance spokesperson Jo Holmes says, “Who knew that the most pressing need for Orakei ratepayers is free Tinder classes?”

“It’s great that old folks are benefiting from dating apps, but this activity shouldn’t be a priority for ratepayer funding – especially when the council is meant to be cutting waste to avoid further rate hikes.”

“The fact that this spending was signed off by a Board which includes a former spokesperson for the Ratepayers’ Alliance shows just how much of a cultural problem of wastefulness there is at Auckland Council. We need a change in culture to make local representatives embarrassed about frittering away ratepayer money on non-essential services.”
