MEDIA RELEASE

14 January 2019

Ngāti Rēhia hosted the first Hui-ā-Hapū o Ngāpuhi for the rōpū, "Kia Anga Mua Ngā Hapū o Ngāpuhi" held at North Tec, Kerikeri on Sunday 13th January 2019. The purpose of this hui was to discuss options moving forward concerning progressing negotiations for redress of Ngāpuhi Te Tiriti o Waitangi grievances.

The hui was clear, the focus of these discussions concerned 31-hapū who voted in support to evolve the Ngāpuhi mandate that was released at the end of 2018. The hui agreed to explore options that empower hapū who supported evolving the mandate and committed to continue moving forward collectively under a united purpose and focus.

“It was made clear at the hui, the purpose of this rōpū was to facilitate discussions to enable hapū that supported the evolved mandate to move forward but also recognising that other hapū or groupings will be considering their own options and pathways. There was full agreement that support will be given to each other in our respective pathways.”, Te Huranga Hohaia, Kaikōrero for Ngati Rehia.

Positive outcomes of the hui include host hapū leading media release, supporting other hapū who want to opt in, and hapū determining their approach and options by the next hui for "Kia Anga Mua Ngā Hapū o Ngāpuhi".

While there is a lot of work to do in the near future by all hapū, those that attended the hui were excited by the discussions and the potential to move forward with a united approach.

An interim working group was established to coordinate information sharing, media releases and upcoming hui for "Kia Anga Mua Ngā Hapū o Ngāpuhi".
