Public statement on the Christchurch massacre - New Zealand Baha'i Community

Auckland, New Zealand (Monday 18 March 2019)

The National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of New Zealand, in condemning the recent massacre of innocent Muslims, calls on the people of Aotearoa to examine the destructive social forces that led to Friday's tragedy. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this act of hatred,” says Suzanne Mahon, secretary of the national body. “Sadly, our country is not free of deeply racist ideology.”

Mrs Mahon said that while it would be naive to think New Zealand was immune to racial violence, there was a way forward. “History has shown us, time and again, that great efforts for peace and unity have emerged from human catastrophes.” “The attainment of world peace is a process,” said Mrs Mahon, “and quite an agonising one at times.”

“We feel for the Muslim community and don't want their suffering to be in vain,” Mrs Mahon stated. “This is a time for us all to stand together as New Zealanders, have a good look at ourselves and recognise our common humanity.”
