New Zealand IT Spending On The Rise

For immediate release 14 November, 2001

NEW ZEALAND IT SPENDING ON THE RISE

Post Sept. 11 survey reveals business sector's bullish mood.

A survey of top business decision makers has revealed that nearly half of all businesses surveyed intend spending more on information technology in the next 12 months than they did last year. Most of the rest will keep on spending as much as they did last year. This despite the economic gloom and the September 11 terrorist attacks in the US.

The AC Nielsen/IDG Communications (NZ) Ltd survey conducted in late September and early October asked: "Is the amount that your organisation currently spends on computers and other IT products likely to increase, decrease or remain about the same over the next 12 months?"

A staggering 91% said they would spend as much as they did last year or increase spending levels, with 46% saying they would increase spend on IT.

"Business in New Zealand is clearly not fazed by the current difficult trading conditions. They're planning now to buy in the New Year so they'll be well positioned for when the economy picks up - as it inevitably will," says IDG Communications (NZ) Ltd marketing manager Alec Brown.

"This is a great sign of health for the business sector and an impressive measure of the forward thinking businesses are now putting in."

The survey, the ninth in an annual series conducted by AC Nielsen on behalf of IDG Communications (NZ) Ltd, focuses on readership and attitudes to New Zealand's main computer related publications.

In other survey results, leading information systems management news weekly Computerworld continues to dominate the market in readership, as well as top rating for usefulness in work, authority, and number one choice.

About the survey

The survey was conducted amongst top executives responsible for IT purchase decisions. A total of 501 interviews were conducted. Half of the interviews were amongst businesses with less than 100 employees, whilst the other half were completed with businesses with 100 or more employees. This year's survey is the first to include the future spending intentions question.
