Maori establish presence in Usenet

Maori are carving a notch on the Internet with the creation of a new and first time Maori newsgroup nz.soc.maoriwhich joins over 54,000 other International newsgroups of which 11 groups consisting of over 20 sub groups are in New Zealand.

The successful vote and implementation follows the recent implementation of .maori.nz 2nd Level domain . Both applications were lead by Karaitiana Taiuru who is happy with the recent developments and hopes it will encourage more Maori to use the Internet for the first time, and for existing Maori users to further explore the options available to them on the Internet.

The purpose of the newsgroup is to discuss and announce all things Maori. Whether it is promoting a personal Maori related web site or requests for whakapapa information the newsgroup will cater to it as long as it is Maori related. It is hoped that in the future the interest will be great enough to create new sub groups Karaitiana Taiuru said.

An initial Request for Discussion was posted in early December and the vote in the middle of December. For the vote to succeed a minimum of 25 people must participate and the yes votes must be at least twice the no votes. nz.soc.maorihad 38 votes with 3 people opposing it and 3 invalid votes a victory of 92%.
