A magnitude 5.5 earthquake was
felt widely in the Wellington region just before 8am today,
Geological and Nuclear Sciences (GNS) said.
The quake
occurred at 7.56am and was centred 30km deep within 5km of
Upper Hutt. There have been no immediate reports of
damage. A swarm of non-damaging small quakes, centered in
the same location, occurred last year.
