The Future Of Farming Hits The Road

The Future Of Farming Hits The Road

A high-tech vision of the future of New Zealand agriculture will be launched at the East Foyer of Parliament at 6.10pm on November 7 by Young Farmer of the Year John McCaw.

The Future Farming Roadshow is a cutting-edge interactive exhibition that will be touring the country from November until March next year, then again in October and November 2007. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.

When visitors enter the exhibition, they will step into the year 2017. Inside, large, state-of-the-art plasma screens display how advances in biotechnology and other factors may have changed New Zealand agriculture.

Visitors can watch and listen to broadcasts of rural news from the future, and inspect virtual farms or digital supermarket shelves. When touched, the farms and the products in the supermarket “open up” to reveal more information.

These displays, which are both informative and engaging, will highlight some of the opportunities and challenges New Zealand agriculture may face during the next decade. There are also case studies of exciting developments in current agricultural research that show just how realistic this peek into the future may be.

The Roadshow will be available for people to view and photograph following the launch.

A list of venues the Roadshow will be visiting, and an image of the interior of the exhibition, are attached below. Entry is free. Please note that the itinerary is not finalised and that more places will be added to the tour.
