Steep section of Colonial Knob Walkway being upgraded

A steep section of Porirua’s popular Colonial Knob Walkway is undergoing a facelift to enhance visitor safety and enjoyment.

Work began this week on transforming 820 metres of slippery narrow track into an evenly-graded walkway. New steps will also be installed in this section of the walkway, known as the Seven Pines track. It runs from the junction between the two reservoirs on the southern end of the Colonial Knob Scenic Reserve leading up to the boundary fence, just past the pine trees half way to the summit.

While attempts will be made to keep the track open during the eight to 10 week duration of the work, it may be necessary to close it at times for safety reasons, Department of Conservation visitor assets ranger Jason Christensen said.

“We are asking visitors to the reserve to heed the warning signs and make their presence known to the contractors who will ensure their safe passage through.”

The work is being undertaken by Wellington-based Tecnico Site Services Ltd.

“Colonial Knob Walkway is a very popular recreational area and it’s important that we have good quality facilities in place,” Mr Christensen said.

The public are reminded that dogs, mountain bikes and motor bikes are not permitted on the walkway, including the private land that the walkway passes through. People also need to take their rubbish with them when they leave the reserve.
