Celebrity plastic surgeons heading Down Under

From the continent that brought us Chanel, Porsche and Concord come two of Europe’s top plastic surgeons, who will be visiting Australia this week to share the latest cosmetic trends with Australian colleagues.

Frenchman Dr Daniel Marchac, who is based in Paris, will be joined by leading Swedish surgeon Dr Per Heden as guest speakers at a scientific conference focusing on the latest in cosmetic surgery of the face, to be held in Adelaide from 17 – 21 October.

Both men have international reputations for excellence in cosmetic plastic surgery. Dr Heden’s plastic surgery clinic in Stockholm is the biggest in Europe and attracts patients from far and wide.

Although there are no firm statistics on just how much cosmetic surgery is performed in Australia, the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates that demand has trebled in the past 10 years, with facelifts and nose reshaping two of the most sought-after procedures.

“We find that our patients prefer a more natural-looking result from their plastic surgery, much as the Europeans do,” said Dr Janek Januszkiewicz, President of The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. “A good cosmetic result should always look natural.”

Over the past few years plastic surgeons have developed the technique of endoscopic or keyhole surgery, which enables them to operate through small incisions and which leaves fewer scars. In particular, surgeons are focusing more attention on the tissues between the eyelid and the mouth, the area known as the mid-face, and speakers at the conference will discuss the latest techniques to lift and correct sagging in this area.

Dr Marchac, who works with famous European celebrities, says, “Unlike the Americans, the Europeans are more discreet … French women in particular don’t want to look as if they’ve had a facelift.”

More than 80 bona fide plastic surgeons from Australia and New Zealand will attend the four day conference, and leading Australasian plastic surgeons will present papers on surgery of the face and neck.

The conference is being run by the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a trans-Tasman educational body of highly trained specialist plastic surgeons who perform cosmetic surgery. ASAPS members are members of the parent national plastic surgery bodies - The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons or The New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons. These are the peak bodies for plastic surgeons who perform both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

Specialist plastic surgeons operate only in accredited surgical facilities, adhere to a strict code of ethics, and regularly attend continuing medical education courses.
