New CRI reflects dynamism of science, sector

For Immediate Release 1 December 2008

New Crown Research Institute reflects dynamism of science, sectors and CRIs

“Today’s formation of Plant & Food Research from the merger of Crop & Food Research and HortResearch is a clear sign of the dynamism and maturity of Crown Research Institutes,” says Science New Zealand chief executive Anthony Scott.

“Crown Research Institutes have a core task: to serve New Zealand through excellent research and its application. If that is best done by merging capabilities and facilities to create greater effectiveness in an area, then it is clear that boards and management will recommend that to the shareholder.

“Science is dynamic, the many sectors that Crown Research Institutes serve are dynamic, and business is dynamic. So the ways in which each CRI serves New Zealand are also very dynamic.

“The 8 CRIs have a wide set of commercial and scientific linkages with research entities and sectors in New Zealand and around the world. The formal and informal arrangements include “virtual entities” and also jointly owned companies.

“The diversity and dynamism shows that CRIs are taking a mature attitude to delivering on their unique responsibility to provide research which benefits New Zealand.”
