Prime Minister’s Science Prize welcomed

Prime Minister’s Science Prize welcomed

“The award of the inaugural Prime Minister’s Science Prize to Dr Bob Buckley and Dr Jeff Tallon from Industrial Research Ltd for their work on superconductivity is welcomed recognition of the contribution they are making to commerce as well as science,” said Simon Arnold CEO of the NZHTSIA.

“As a direct result of their work New Zealand companies are leading the world in the supply of industrial and scientific equipment based on high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets. New Zealand’s HTS-110 Ltd is currently the only company world-wide commercially selling this sophisticated high value equipment.

“This is building into a significant New Zealand export business and over the next few years further high value products like medical and industry MRI should be added to its product range.

“The even bigger opportunity for HTS technology will come in power systems equipment, with uptake expected late this decade.

“New Zealand companies are already positioning themselves to play a role.

“General Cable Superconductors Ltd is manufacturing a HTS cable specifically designed for the high currents and AC power found in large power systems equipment. Like HTS-110 Ltd its product is a first world-wide.

“Both companies are being supported by a rapidly developing local industry, and are attracting significant international companies as partners.”

The NZHTSIA represents around 40 businesses, research organisations and tertiary institutes.
