New research casts doubt over PCE 1080 report

A new research paper by scientist Alexis Pietak (PhD) suggests that "The potential for widespread poisoning of New Zealand's large number of endemic and threatened/endangered omnivorous, insectivorous, and carnivorous bird species by the uncontrolled distribution of poison-laced food throughout an entire ecosystem is a serious issue worthy of international concern and immediate action."

Pietak reviewed the existing scientific literature available on the use of 1080 poison, and found that scientists have predominately studied the least likely group of birds to be affected by poison drops - namely - nectar, fruit, and foliage feeders - and have ignored the species most at risk - the omnivorous, insectivorous, and carnivorous bird species.

Pietak states that only 10% of the research available has been published in international journals, and 68% of studies are funded by DoC or AHB - the largest users of 1080. She closes by stating ... "poison operations threaten numerous species of endemic, threatened and endangered birds, and therefore place the status of whole ecosystems at risk.
