A taste of winter

A rapidly evolving weather system is expected to arrive from the Tasman Sea bringing a wet end to the week over many parts of New Zealand,especially across central areas.

Media and Communications Meteorologist Dan Corbett commented, "this approaching weather system will linger across central New Zealand over the next couple of days. Persistent and at times heavy rain is likely over central areas but it will be much more patchy further north."

A lingering low to the west of the North Island will cause the front to stall across central New Zealand. Rain could be heavy at times from Taranaki down to Wellington, as well as parts of Nelson, especially over the hills and ranges.

This slow moving front will gradually weaken by Saturday as a second active front, bringing a surge of much colder air, sweeps over the country.Behind this, the wintry air could drop snow down to very low levels across the far south of the South Island. The invigorated cold air should cover all of New Zealand by early next week bringing the risk of overnight frosts,as far north as the Central Plateau.
