Unsettled start but a quieter end

A very active trough will bring quite a spell of heavy rain, gales and snow as it moves across central New Zealand today and Wednesday.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"This weather system will have a bit of everything from heavy rain, severe gales and even snow to lower levels before it clears away by midweek."

A cold southerly spreading across the South Island is expected reach Wellington during this afternoon. "As this southerly reaches the Capital we're expecting bursts of heavy rain and a change to cooler temperatures and very strong winds. It should be quite a dramatic contrast to the current conditions," Corbett went on to say.

The effects of the southerly arriving over central New Zealand will also be felt in north Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Buller, with a period of heavy rain and/or snow, and strong winds, expected later today.

"Northern New Zealand is not out of the woods yet, either," said Corbett."For the rest of today there's the risk of heavy thundery rain. On Wednesday, as a colder southerly works its way north, the rain should ease right off but it should become noticeably more windy." Quieter and more settled weather will spread in by the second half of the week.
