First 2013 Census results will be released on 3 December – Media release
4 June 2013
Results from the 2013 Census, revealing how many people there were in New Zealand on census night, will be released on Tuesday, 3 December 2013, Statistics NZ said today.
At the time of the last census in 2006, there were 4.03 million people usually resident in New Zealand. Including overseas visitors, there were 4.14 million people.
“The census is the official snapshot of New Zealand at a point in time. Due to the seven-year gap since the last census, this information is highly anticipated by many organisations and people,” General Manager 2013 Census Sarah Minson said.
“This initial release of information in December will be followed by regular releases over the following 18 months. Information will be freely available on the Statistics NZ website,” Ms Minson said.
“In December, as well as the total population, we’ll be able to say how many dwellings there were, and give high-level information for Māori, as well as a range of other information like the age and sex breakdown of the country.”
The 2013 Census products and services release schedule published today gives the timetable and descriptions of the products and services.
“It takes some time between collecting all of the census forms and producing the results.
“In the 2013 Census, we collected over 5.6 million individual and dwelling forms; about 2 million of those were completed online. These forms are being scanned and checked while maintaining the highest levels of security to ensure everyone’s private information is kept confidential.”
Census information is used by government, councils, community groups, iwi, and businesses to plan for the future.
