A wintry weekend but improving next week

A low lingering over northern New Zealand through Saturday and a very cold southerly outbreak on Sunday together make for a classic wintry weekend.

MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett commented,"Sunday in particular will feel bone chilling, with strong or gale force winds in many places, rapidly rising seas, rain, and snow to low-ish levels. The plummeting snow level on Sunday could make travel over many higher routes challenging."

On Saturday, spells of heavy and persistent rain accompanied by gales are expected in eastern areas of the North Island, while the South Island remains mostly fine and frosty.

On a brighter note, weather in the first week of the school holidays will gradually improve, becoming drier and warmer by the end of Tuesday.
