A welcome return to high pressure

A welcome return to high pressure

It was a tempestuous start to the school holidays with wet, windy and wintry conditions in many places. However, as high pressure builds over the country, the weather is expected to settle down over much of New Zealand in the coming days.

"As a large area of high pressure pushes its way across New Zealand, the weather will quieten down" MetService meteorologist John Law explained. "Although we are expecting some sunnier days and lighter winds with this high pressure, we will pay for it with cold and frosty nights"

Although the worst of this cold outbreak is over, some snow is still likely to fall to quite low levels around the North Island. "Expect snow down to 200 or 300 metres in places today, especially on the Rimutakas and about the Central Plateau.."

The latest road snowfall warnings can be found on the MetService website whilst information about road closures can be found on the NZTA traffic webpage ( http://nzta.govt.nz/traffic/)

Cold air is expected to remain over New Zealand at the start so temperatures will lift only slowly towards the end of the week.
