Enter spring westerlies

The last really cold snap for a while has just about ended. For a few days from this weekend, New Zealand will be in the grip of westerlies.

"The westerly pattern of the next few days looks very spring-like," commented MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett. "This is a recipe for fine weather and mild days in eastern places, and cloudy conditions with occasional wet spells in the west." The next major trough is expected to cross the country around Tuesday and Wednesday of the coming week. "Next Tuesday and Wednesday, a strong northwest flow should cover New Zealand," Corbett went on to say. "Even at this early stage, it seems reasonably likely that there will be heavy rainfalls on the South Island West Coast, and gales in eastern places from about Wairarapa southwards."
