One year on, .kiwi.nz going strong

One year on, .kiwi.nz going strong

One year after its launch, .kiwi.nz is the top performing second level domain in terms of newly created domain name percentages.

Recent figures from the .nz domain name space show that from October 2012 to August 2013, .kiwi.nz experienced a 35.65% growth in new registrations and, as of August 31 this year, there were a total of 9,078 .kiwi.nz registrations.

Spokesperson for the .nz domain name space Patrick Watson says, even though .kiwi.nz represents only a small share of the over 540,000 active .nz domain names, statistics at its first year anniversary show it is proving popular.

“Last year the Domain Name Commission’s decision to allow the registration of .kiwi.nz domain names expanded the range of choice in the market,” he said.

“It seems the market has responded to this decision and it is tracking well towards 10,000 active .kiwi.nz domain names.”

The next best performing second level domains, in terms of growth of new registrations, were:

2 - .co.nz at 21.80%

3 - .net.nz at 21.23%

4 - .maori.nz at 18.96%

5 - .geek.nz at 16.31%

6 - .org.nz at 15.43%

7 - .ac.nz at 14.40%

8 - .gen.nz at 8.13%

9 - .school.nz at 7.36%

In order of overall size, registration figures for the second levels as of August 31, are:

1- .co.nz (462,946 domain names)

2 -.net.nz (29, 431 domain names)

3 - .org.nz (28,050 domain names)

4 - .kiwi.nz (9,078 domain names)

5 - .school.nz (3,354 domain names)

6 - .ac.nz (2,052 domain names)

7 - .gen.nz (1,372 domain names)

8 - .geek.nz (1,227 domain names)

9 - .maori.nz (1,119 domain names)

Second level domains .govt.nz, .health.nz, .iwi.nz, .mil.nz, .parliament.nz and cri.nz have not been included because they are moderated and so there are restrictions around who can register them.
