One low followed by another
The large area of low pressure currently lying over the North Island is likely to dominate the weather for the next day or so.During Thursday,it is expected to move away to the east of the country.
"Pressures over the North Island are currently quite low," commented MetService Media and Communications Meteorologist Daniel Corbett. "As of 9: 00am Wednesday morning, the depression was sitting just to west of Auckland with central pressure of 980 hPa."
This low is expected to pass back across northern New Zealand later today, bringing a period of heavy rain and strong winds to Northland, and possibly a period of strong winds in Auckland.
Heavy rain is expected to continue in parts of Marlborough and the Kaikoura Coast until later this afternoon. In other places heavy rain has eased, though isolated heavy falls are still possible today.
"There's only a brief respite between this period of stormy weather and the next one to come," Corbett went on to say. "Another deep low is expected to be approaching the South Island on Friday. Unlike the current system, this one is in the "roaring forties" and will pass fairly quickly across the country on Saturday."
