New ISO technical specification for carbon footprinting
New ISO technical specification for carbon footprinting ISO TS 14067 2013
02 October 2013
Issue 54 – October 2013
ISO/TS 14067:2013 Greenhouse gases – Carbon footprint of products – Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication was published in May 2013.The technical specification covers principles, requirements, and guidelines for the quantification and communication of the carbon footprint of a product, based on:
• standards on
life cycle assessment (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044) for
• environmental labels and declarations (ISO 14020, ISO 14024, and ISO 14025) for communication.
The article below discusses ISO/TS 14067:2013. It was first published by PE Australasia and it summarised here with permission.
More consistency in the quantification and communication of carbon footprints of products is the aim of ISO/TS 14067:2013. Land use change, soil carbon, carbon storage in products, and other carbon related requirements are not specified in the existing ISO standard, ISO 14044:2006 Environmental management – Life cycle assessment – Requirements and guidelines. ISO/TS 14067 includes reporting, performance tracking, carbon footprint declarations, and labels.
Dr Barbara Nebel, Managing Director of PE Australasia, represented New Zealand in the ISO working group that published ISO 14067. She says that, 'combining requirements for quantification and communication in one specification is a great step forward'.
• reinforces the importance of
thinking about the intended communication, during the goal
and scope phase at the start of any carbon footprint or life
cycle assessment project
• will benefit organisations, governments, communities, and other interested parties by providing clarity and consistency in quantifying and communicating carbon footprints.
