Yo yoing temperatures for some

Temperatures over the South Island are expected to fluctuate significantly this week, with spells of fine weather interrupted by several showery, cold southerly changes. "Choosing what to wear this week will be tough for those in the South Island, and we recommend looking hard at the forecast temperatures each day," commented MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

A cold front spreads over the South Island today, bringing a period of rain and cold southerlies, before fizzling out as it reaches the lower North Island tonight. When the rain clears, this cold air is expected to produce frosts in parts of Canterbury and Otago on Tuesday morning.Temperatures return to normal again mid-week, as a ridge of high pressure builds over New Zealand, before another cold front moves over the country late Thursday and Friday.

"There looks to be a big contrast between Thursday and Friday in the weather in the east of the South Island," Glassey said. "On Thursday, we are forecasting mainly fine weather with maximum temperatures around 20 degrees in many eastern towns, then on Friday after the southerly goes through, there will be showers with temperatures struggling to get into the low teens."

Over the North Island it is expected to remain mostly fine until Friday. However, afternoon heating is likely to produce isolated heavy showers inland. The weather is expected to improve over the whole country for the beginning of Labour weekend, but may deteriorate later in the weekend.
