Rain hard to come by as another high rolls in

Rain has been proving hard to come by for most provinces in New Zealand recently, and this is set to continue as a large high is expected to bring dry weather for almost the entire country this weekend - including Auckland Anniversary day on Monday. "While many will be looking forward to enjoying the fine weather, some places are in need of rain and this won't help," said MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

A pool of cold air in the upper atmosphere is producing showers, some heavy and thundery, in the east of both Islands today (Wednesday). However, the showers depart again tomorrow as the high moves onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea. "With the high firmly locking itself in place over the middle of the country, most places should be fine from Thursday, although easterlies may bring some cloud and isolated showers to Northland," Glassey went on to say.

For the Auckland anniversary regatta on Monday, there is likely to be an east or northeast breeze of around 15 knots (28 km/h) to accompany the fine weather. However, skippers should check the latest marine forecasts atmetservice.com before heading out. Dunedin can also expect sunny weather when it hosts the ANZ International Series ODI cricket matches between Sri Lanka and the BLACKCAPS on Friday and Sunday.
