Some weather at last
Some weather at last
Most places will get some wet and windy weather this weekend as a front moves across the country on Friday followed by a low on Saturday. Sundaywill be a more settled day for most.
"An active front will move rapidly cross the South Island during Friday morning, then the North Island in the afternoon and early evening," said MetService Meteorologist Emma Blades. "This front will bring rain from Taranaki to Wellington and to the west of the South Island, and showers to most other places."
A severe weather watch has been issued for heavy rain and gales created by the front, with a period of heavy rain and northerly gales forecast for Nelson, Buller and Marlborough, and northerly gales for the Canterbury High Country and Wellington. There is potential for thunderstorms for some regions, too, so keep an eye out at http://www.metservice.com/warnings/home as we enter the weekend.
Saturday is looking to be another wet day for many places, as a deep low moves across the lower South Island during Saturday, while an associated trough moves across the remainder of New Zealand. The low is expected to bring rain to most places in the South Island, with heavy falls in the west. Taranaki to Wellington will again feel the brunt of the wind and rain in the North Island; showers are likely elsewhere. Saturday is packed with events across the country so our meteorologists will continue to monitor the forecasts and provide updates.
Sunday looks to be a more settled day for the North Island and the east of the South Island, with the sun putting in an appearance, as a ridge starts to build. This is good news for the Ports of Auckland Round the Bays that day, the final day of the Les Mills New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Wellington, and for the Cricket World Cup game in Napier starting at 11.00am.
