Every Draft Needs An Editor

Every Draft Needs An Editor, So Who’s Editing The Draft Text For The Paris Climate Conference?

On Wednesday 22 April 2015, people from around the world recognised Earth Day in a number of different ways. For a group of young lawyers, students and legal academics in Wellington it signalled the launch of a brand new initiative – http://www.paristext2015.com. This interactive website, entitled Deconstructing Paris, is home to analysis and comment on the draft negotiating text for COP21 – the UNFCCC conference occuring this December in Paris.

The aim of this conference is to reach agreement between 197 states on how to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions beyond 2020, but can it achieve this? Will it actually work? These and many other such questions are on the minds of this group of legal commentators. They have set themselves the task of providing quality legal resources about the Paris climate talks to the public, media, policy makers and politicians - both in New Zealand and abroad.

Their key focus is on deconstructing the draft negotiating text, as that will form the backbone for any climate agreement that comes out of Paris. In particular, they hope to make the wording of the text accessible to the public, outline the likely direction of the agreement and highlight where non-committal language is being used that might enable states to avoid taking meaningful action on climate change. The new website is documenting their progress in the lead up to the conference. Additionally, it features an easy-to-use and structured version of the 90 page draft text, as well as articles, blog posts and news summaries offering comment on broader issues surrounding the Paris negotiations.
