Communities Around NZ Unite for Tree Protection
Communities Around NZ Unite for Tree Protection
Communities around New Zealand
have gathered today at their cherished trees, calling for a
strengthened RMA with better tree protections and
notification processes.
“The situation is dire,
communities around Aotearoa New Zealand are facing
situations where they don’t have a voice and significant
trees are being cut down,” said National Day of Action
organiser Michael Tavares.
The government and local
body authorities have a responsibility to include local
people in the conversations about trees of significance in
their areas. That means a stronger RMA and robust
notification and consultation processes.”
People
across the country rallied as part of a National Day of
Action to Save the RMA, showing their determination to
reclaim the RMA and save their trees. This is in response to
the recent events in Titirangi where a Kauri tree had to be
occupied for 81 hours to prevent it from being cut
down.
Members of the Titirangi community had tried for
two years to find a different outcome before the significant
Kauri and Rimu trees were scheduled for removal early in
March.
“We are lucky the Titirangi Kauri was saved
this time, but we shouldn’t have to sit in trees for days
on end to save them, or just simply for our community to be
included in the conversation about their fate.
“We
need to reclaim the RMA and restore it’s purpose of
environmental protection and community
engagement.”
