Deputy Directors appointed to strengthen Antarctic science

The New Zealand Antarctic Research Institute (NZARI) is pleased to announce the appointment of two part-time Deputy Directors to help deliver the NZARI Science Programme.

Prof Craig Cary, University of Waikato and Dr Vonda Cummings, NIWA Wellington are well known to the Antarctic science community and Antarctica New Zealand who have supported their work on ice over many seasons.

Both Deputy Directors are recognised internationally and within the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research (SCAR), an inter-disciplinary committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU).

“I’m excited to be adding this level of experience to the Science Team. It will help us to support the breadth of disciplines that research covers in Antarctica,” says NZARI Director, Prof Gary Wilson.

“New Zealand’s science objectives are intrinsically linked to helping us understand the increasingly visible impact of a changing climate in a warming world”.

Critical research underway and planned in Antarctica aims to understand the past and present to help us predict and protect the future.

“NZARI, in partnership with research agencies around the world, is developing a global understanding of Antarctica’s impact and vulnerability in a changing climate,” says Prof Wilson.

The Deputy Director roles form part of the NZARI leadership team and will include specific areas of focus on programme development, external engagement and fundraising.

Each role constitutes 0.25 FTE and NZARI is grateful to the University of Waikato and NIWA for their ongoing support.

These appointments take place with immediate effect.
