Conference provides opportunity to showcase Māori research

Conference provides an opportunity to showcase Māori research, science and innovation.

Auckland 25 May 2015. Next month New Zealand’s seven Crown Research Institutes, alongside Callaghan Innovation, are coming together to host Te Ara Pūtaiao 2015, a two-day symposium being held 22 - 23 June 2015at the Novotel Hotel in Rotorua aimed at fostering engagement between some of New Zealand’s top research science companies and leading figures in the Māori economy.

‘Developing Pathways, Realising Potential’ is the key theme of the event, which features presentations by a selection of expert scientists and keynote speakers, as well as entrepreneurs, business leaders, directors, trustees and government officials. In addition, the event will also include a collection of research case studies, workshops and discussion sessions all designed to strengthen collaborative efforts to realise the potential of Māori land and water resources.

Māori have a strong and active presence in New Zealand’s primary industries, and the New Zealand government has identified key actions for realising the potential of Māori land and water assets through its ‘He kai kei aku ringa’ strategy and action plan. One of the pivotal steps to success is encouraging engagement and understanding between the research sector and Māori organisations.

“Te Ara Pūtaiao 2015 will be exciting” says Marino Tahi, Chair of the TAP 2015 organising committee.

“It’s the first time that all of the Crown Research Institutes have joined forces to bring together a programme that we can all showcase science and innovation through a broad range of case studies. We have a number of our lead Māori scientists presenting to demystify the perception our people have that scientists all dress in white lab coats.”

“We are very fortunate to have Minister Flavell attending, as well an amazing line up of industry leaders and lead government agencies that play their part in advancing the aspirations of Māori. The opportunity to meet people of this calibre and share each other’s experiences will be the highlight.”
