Temperatures pick-up but weather deteriorates

Temperatures will pick-up this long weekend as a northerly flow develops over the country. However, the weather is forecast to deteriorate, particularly in western and northern areas, as a front moves across the country.

The high pressure currently bringing the cold, but settled weather to New Zealand, is replaced by a northerly flow this weekend. A front embedded within this flow will bring wet weather, mainly to northern and western areas of both islands, with a sprinkling to the eastern parts. The front is forecast to approach Fiordland late on Friday, then move up the South Island on Saturday, before stalling over the lower North Island on Sunday. Another front then approaches the South Island on Monday.

"Daytime temperatures will increase as a northerly flow develops and relatively warmer air is brought to New Zealand from across the Tasman Sea, " said MetService meteorologist Emma Blades. "Cloudier skies will also prevent night time temperatures from dropping too low by trapping in that heat overnight." The warmest spots will be in the north and the east, with Christchurch forecast to reach the high teens for the Athletics New Zealand Half Marathon Championships being held there on Sunday.

Next week looks to remain unsettled as an area of low pressure develops out over the Tasman Sea and then moves eastwards onto New Zealand bringing further wind and rain.
