Unsettled weather for the week ahead

Unsettled weather for the week ahead

An active front has been moving east across the country today bringing northerly gales and heavy rain to some parts of the South Island. Exposed places in inland Canterbury have seen gusts of 100 km/h this morning, while some gauges in Westland have recorded 65 mm of rain in the last 12 hours.

As we head into the new week there is more rain and wind on the way, with another active front expected to bring heavy rain to northern and western New Zealand on Monday, along with strong to gale northwesterlies. A Severe Weather Watch has been issued for heavy rain in southern Westland,Fiordland and eastern Bay of Plenty on Monday.

Behind the front, unsettled northwesterlies persist over central New Zealand through to Wednesday. This means western areas are likely to be peppered by showers, while the east should remain mostly dry with temperatures reaching the late teens in some spots.

During Wednesday and early Thursday, a cold showery southwest flow spreads over New Zealand, with some brief snow possible for the mountain passes.

This is likely to be an unsettled period of weather for New Zealand, and people are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and any watches/warnings at metservice.com or on mobile devices atm.metservice.com.
