Mr Explorer Douglas and his giant geological maps

Mr Explorer Douglas and his giant geological maps of South Westland

A talk by Simon Nathan
Wednesday 30 March 5.30pm – 6.30pm

(40 minutes talk with time for Q&A) with time afterwards to view the maps on the lower ground floor if you so choose. The event is on Te Ahumairangi, Ground Floor, National Library, cnr Molesworth and Aitken Streets.

Simon Nathan, science historian, biographer, and geologist, will discuss the achievements of Charlie Douglas, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished – but least known – explorers.

Charles Edward Douglas Geological Roll Maps, c.1896-1903, Hokitika River to Okarito River (R15007618)

Charlie Douglas devoted himself to the detailed exploration and mapping of Westland.

Late in his career Douglas produced two huge maps of Westland showing geology and mineral prospects, which are the subject of this talk.

You can see the two maps on display on the Lower Ground floor of the National Library of New Zealand, Aitken Street entrance. The larger one is over 4 metres long – a massive and beautiful work.

2016 is the centenary of the death of Charlie Douglas so it is particularly pertinent timing for this talk.

This is event is being run in association with the Friends of the Turnbull Library

Please RSVP to events.natlib@dia.govt.nz with Charlie Douglas in the subject line.

We look forward to seeing you at the Library.
