Autumnal sunshine continues - Monday 28 March 2016

With high pressure the dominant feature, this week’s weather will be fairly settled. However, an area of low pressure is likely to bring wet weather to the northwest towards the end of the week.

“Sunshine and mild temperatures have been the story for most of the country this long Easter weekend, although there have been a few showers about thanks to a couple of weak fronts passing through,” said meteorologist Emma Blades. Blenheim got the top temperature yesterday, reaching 26.2C, closely followed by Whangarei on 26.0C.

The weak fronts will continue to bring a few showers to western areas on Tuesday, as well as a period of rain to Southland, Clutha and Fiordland. High pressure then builds over the country on Wednesday bringing sunshine to the majority, although a southerly flow on the east coast could bring brief showers to exposed areas there.

The sunshine theme continues on Thursday, with a northeast flow developing over the country as the area of high pressure moves away to the east. Meanwhile, out in the Tasman Sea an area of low pressure starts to deepen and move eastwards towards New Zealand. “This means a likely wet end to the week for some, especially in the west,” added Ms Blades.
