Fresh and frosty for the Queen’s Birthday

Crisp blue skies and frosty calm conditions prevail for the long weekend as a winter ridge sidles over New Zealand. Overnight temperatures for many towns and cities will plummet below zero. Although the coldest temperatures are expected around Central Otago, frosts – some of which could be severe - can be expected in sheltered parts of both islands throughout the weekend.

“Winter started with a few snow showers, followed up by clear skies under a ridge,” explained meteorologist Tom Adams. “This means that icy roads and frosty mornings are set to continue through the long weekend and into next week, so those travelling on the roads this weekend should take care.”

Any visiting aliens to Wellington’s Armageddon Sci-Fi expo are recommended to wrap up warm, and the same applies for any steampunk aficionados heading to Oamaru’s steampunk festival. Despite the predominantly fine conditions, a few showers will pop up in the far South, and on the east coast of Northland – possibly affecting northern Auckland – Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.
