Rain, Wind, Snow and Sunshine

The weather over New Zealand is likely to be changeable through until Monday. An intense high, which brought frosty mornings and fine weather to most places during the last week, has departed to the east of the country. This is allowing several fronts to move over New Zealand in the next few days. “We will be saying goodbye to the frosty mornings for few days, but there will be some rain and strong winds for many places,” commented MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey. The rain and wind will take a break from most places on Saturday, and the sun should make an appearance, especially in the east of the country. Rugby fans can also expect a dry Saturday evening in Auckland for the All Blacks vs Wales test match.

However, a cold southerly change spreads north over New Zealand on Sunday and the early part of Monday, bringing another period of rain, and snow to about 500 metres in the South Island. ”This snow should be useful for the ski fields with the first few fields opening this weekend,” added Glassey. The weather should become fine for most places on Monday, and the cold air left behind from the southerly change is likely to result in a return to morning frosts for many areas.
