Breast Cancer in New Zealand gets Boost in its Fight
Breast Cancer in New Zealand gets Boost in its Fight
Katherine Gale, an Oncoplastic breast surgeon at
North Shore Hospital and in private practice at A.O.B.I., is
bringing world renowned Oncoplastic and Reconstructive
breast surgeons (UK and France), a breast radiologist (UK),
a Radiation Oncologist (Germany) and Medical
Oncologist/Genetic Breast Cancer expert (USA) to New
Zealand. They are here to train 130 surgeons attending from
Australia, NZ and Asia in the most up to date clinical
procedures during a a first in Australasian breast surgery
– live surgical teaching sessions via video link from the
next room.
Ms Gale, having completed a fellowship at the Nottingham Breast Institute says that on average the Australasians are about 5 years behind our U.K. counterparts when it comes to the highly specialized Oncoplastic Breast surgery. This specialty aims to remove all cancerous tissue from the breast, reconstruct and augment so that the patient is left with a beautiful, symmetrical and HEALTHY result all in one operation. For patients this means overall less recovery time as there is only one operation, for the health service this should also result in shorter waiting lists through a reduction in the overall number of surgeries being performed.
There is a ‘Consumer Day’ on
Sunday 10th July at the Langham for patients and families to
hear talks from the experts on controversial subjects, such
as how to manage low risk screen detected lesions (low grade
DCIS – very topical of late even in the Herald) and hear
all about the latest advances and treatment options that are
being developed. There will also be a free ‘Pink Brunch’
for which Gucci have donated a stunning pink handbag to
raffle
off.
