Robot Helps Northland Science Fair Celebrate 37-Years of Innovation

Northland, New Zealand – 15 August 2016

Future science and technology innovators set to impress in Whangarei

Some of Northland’s best and brightest young minds will be joined by humanoid robot “Baxter” at the Central Northland Science & Technology Fair (CNSTF) in Whangarei from August 30 to September 1.

Celebrating 37 years of science and innovation, this year’s CNTSF will play host to cutting-edge science projects from intermediate and high school students across central Northland.

Those attending will also have a chance to interact with Baxter (www.rethinkrobotics.com/baxter) - the only robot in the world approved to work alongside humans without having to be in a safety cage.
The event’s organisers invite all Northlanders to attend the koha-entry event and experience first-hand the high-calibre of work being produced by youth in the region as well see the hi-tech robot in action.

“Involvement in the Fair is a great launching pad for our future scientists and researchers. Every year we are impressed by what our exhibitors come up with,” said Central Northland Science & Technology Fair committee member Venee Mortimer.

The CNSTF attracts exciting competition from students who are passionate about and excel in science and technology and the standard of work on display is always impressive.

“The importance of education in the areas of science and technology has been recognised across all sectors of society. It is exciting to see how participants in the fair are focused on pushing boundaries and looking to impact the future in a positive way. We’re also very excited to have Baxter at the fair as it lets participants see the real life application of science,” Ms Mortimer said.

Exhibits at the CNSTF will be judged in various categories with top awards offered to the most topical, innovative and relevant projects. A full explanation of judging criteria can be found on the CNSTF website -www.centralnorthlandsciencefair.co.nz.

The science fair is open to the public every day from 10:00am Tuesday, 30 August to Thursday, 1 September
at Forum North, 7 Rust Ave, Whangarei. Attendance is by koha donation and organisers encourage Northlanders of all ages to visit.
