Fresh powder for South Island ski fields
Fresh powder for South Island ski fields
A storm set
to strengthen east of New Zealand on Friday will bring a
late season wintry blast to the South Island’s ski
fields.
As the weather system moves away on Saturday, it will leave more tranquil conditions in its wake, ideal for those looking to hit the slopes. From there, an aggressive cold front may deliver snow and a proper winter chill from Monday into Tuesday. During the first part of September, unseasonably warm air might stream southward, possibly resulting in a downward snow base trend.
South Island
Saturday looks to have fantastic weather for
hitting the slopes across the Queenstown-Lakes with light
winds and plenty of sunshine. Further north, patchy snow is
forecast to ease by midday across Canterbury’s fields,
giving way to pleasant conditions across the region’s
fields by afternoon. On Sunday, snow patches will affect
Queenstown’s ski fields and Canterbury ski fields later in
the day. An impressive late winter cold front is expected to
flick northward from Monday into Tuesday, resulting in
another round of fresh powder for the South Island’s
fields. Favourable conditions --cold but tranquil-- will
follow during the middle and latter stages of the week.
North Island
After a late-week push of warm but
unsettled weather, conditions are set to ease at Mt Ruapehu
later Saturday. Aside from a few renegade showers, Sunday
and Monday look like a great days to hit the slopes. A
powerful southerly push will make conditions less than ideal
on Tuesday but bring a refreshed wintry feel for the middle
and latter stages of the week along with fabulous
weather.
Extended outlook
Spring starts next Thursday and it is currently expected to be met with increasingly warm conditions across New Zealand.
