A sandwich of weather systems to start the week

A sandwich of weather systems to start the week

New Zealand will be bookended by inclement weather on Sunday and Monday, before a high pressure cell establishes dominance across the country on Tuesday. The high will provide a fittingly calm and mild finish to the winter, but the outlook is for more changeable weather starting on the first day of spring.

A low which is currently developing off the Gold Coast is forecast to move towards the North Island, clipping northern and eastern areas as it slides past. Rain will develop in the Far North late tonight, spreading down to the Auckland, Bay of Plenty and the Gisborne regions during Monday before clearing in the evening. Alongside the rain, there will be gale force winds in the marine areas to the east of the upper North Island for a time on Monday.

Meanwhile, twin cold fronts move onto the South Island overnight tonight, then race northwards over the country in the following 24 hours. These fronts will briefly bring rain or showers to many places, but the western South Island will be most impacted. Behind the fronts, a fresh Southwesterly will keep a lid on the temperatures over the next few days.

By Tuesday, most of the wet weather will have come and gone. Sunny conditions will be on the cards for many Kiwis thanks to a ridge of high pressure spreading over the country. However, it will not last too long. “While winter should finish in style, spring looks set to start in typical fashion on Thursday.” discussed MetService Meteorologist Angus Hines “It looks as though we’ll see northerly winds picking up ahead of a fast approaching front, which is a classic set up during spring time in New Zealand.”
