A spell of dry weather for Labour Weekend

A spell of dry weather is on the cards for nearly everyone this Labour Weekend. Rain or showers affecting parts of the country today, should clear the South Island on Friday and most of the North Island on Saturday. However, the weather is likely to deteriorate again later on Monday as a front approaches from the Tasman Sea.

On Saturday, most of the South Island can expect sunny weather after early morning frosts. Meanwhile, showers affecting parts of the North Island in a southerly flow, are expected to become confined to the Gisborne and Hawkes Bay regions by the afternoon. “Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay may see some heavy rain from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, but that should ease by the end of Saturday,” commented MetService Meteorologist Stephen Glassey.

Sunday is looking dry for almost the entire country. However, a few showers could still affect Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay, and high cloud is expected to increase over the South Island.

“Sunday is looking like the best day to get out the barbeque in the North Island and temperatures will be warmer than Saturday because the southerly is dying out. For the South Island, Saturday is probably the best day,” said Glassey.

On Monday, cloud is likely to increase over all of New Zealand as the trough approaches. Rain is expected to develop in the west of the South Island, and a few showers arrive in other parts of the country by the end of the day.

The front is expected to move over the country on Tuesday, bringing rain or showers to most places. “The worst of the weather should hold off from most places until Tuesday, just in time for people to head back to work,” added Glassey.
